(September 1, 2006) Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Housing for Low-Income Seniors to Celebrate Port St. Lucie Opening
There
will be lots of excitement in Port St. Lucie on September 15th when
The Most Rev. Gerald M. Barbarito will bless the new housing
building sponsored by the Diocese of Palm Beach. The facility, Villa
Seton, located at 3300 S.W. Chartwell Street, Port St. Lucie, has 49
affordable apartments all occupied by very low-income seniors.
The
Office of Housing for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm
Beach operates the facility. The administrator, Bill Kerr, said he
now has a waiting list of more than 200 eligible applicants waiting
patiently for an opening. To be eligible, applicants must be 62
years of age or older, have an annual income of $19,100 or less
($21,850 or less for two people) and have the ability to fulfill
lease requirements. There is a Section 8 subsidy from the U.S.
Department of HUD for all units so rent will depend on the
resident’s income. This is an equal housing opportunity.
Villa
Seton was originally funded in 2000 by HUD and additional funding
came from the State of Florida. This facility is a great example of
how two funding sources can be combined to make the housing complex
not only possible, but better than the typical government subsidized
apartments. Villa Seton has a high energy efficient design, is built
to the most stringent hurricane code, and includes extra amenities
such as the solar heated swimming pool.
At
11:00 A.M. the bishop will conduct a short blessing ceremony
followed by an open house of the facility where invited guests are
encouraged to visit residents in their apartments as well as the
common areas. Five of the units are designed and occupied by
mobility impaired residents.
For
additional information, please contact Bill Kerr at Villa Seton
(772) 344-6969 or Robin Lunn in the of Catholic Charities’ Housing
Office at (561) 775-9571.
