Director of Religious Education - Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church located in Boca Raton is searching for a Director of Religious Education (DRE).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implements, organizes, supervises, and administers the two years formation program for the sacrament of the Eucharist and for the sacrament of Confirmation.
  • In collaboration with the Pastor, oversees the ordering of textbooks, teaching materials and resources for the program as well as coordinates with the Pastor the celebration of the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.
  • In charge of recruitment, training and supervising of catechists and volunteers, the counseling and visiting with students, parents, and teachers when classroom problems arise, and the participation in Diocesan training and ongoing formation to keep current on trends in catechetical ministry.
  • The Religious education program is a ten-month program that runs in parallel to the school year. The program closes at the end of May and reopens at the beginning of August.   
  • The program requires a minimum of 22 hours per week to a maximum of no more than 30hrs, Tuesday through Friday. Classes are held on Wednesdays and organized in two sessions. The first session begins at 4:00 pm and the second one at 6:30 pm. An encounter/session with children and parents takes place on a Saturday four times throughout the academic year to assist both catechumens and parents that are “home schooling” their children during the first year of formation of the First Communion program.
  • The Academic year begins at the end of September and ends the last week of April. It is desirable that the DRE is available for office hours at least Tuesday through Thursday. 
  • This is a position that requires evenings and some weekends

Qualifications:

  • Should be a Roman Catholic, that is in good standing and participates in the sacramental life of the Church and adheres to Church teachings.
  • Preferred that the DRE has earned a Master level degree in areas of Theology or Education
  • Has more than 5 years of experience in the field of Faith formation and/or Children education, and knowledge of catechetical resources.
  • The ability to speak or communicate in a language other than English is preferred given the cultural diversity of the students.
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, flexibility, work independently, ethical values, interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, be self-motivated.
  • Proficiency in Formation Office Management Programs, MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Internet.
  • Ability to respect confidentiality, exercise discretion and make responsible judgment calls.
  • Establishes good communication with parents and children.
  • Ability to communicate well with the Pastor, Parish clergy, staff, and volunteers.
  • The applicant must complete the Diocesan “Protecting God’s Children” workshop and obtain VECHS Clearance and should be willing to adhere to all Diocesan Policies and Procedures and complete all required employment documents, and must have awareness and understanding of the canonical limitations of this position.
  • Ability to work effectively with Diocesan employees, departments heads, representatives of other agencies and the general public.

  • Strong ethical values.

Physical Requirements:

  • Time spent working closely with others.
  • Frequent extended periods of sitting.
  • Frequent use of both hands and fingers (i.e., typing).
  • Occasional periods of walking, standing, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Ability of minimal hearing (i.e., loud noises, sirens) and routine hearing (i.e., listening to others in conversations).
  • Frequent light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds.
  • Occasional moderate carrying and lifting of 15 - 44 pounds.
