St. Therese de Lisieux Parish serves the western Lake Worth and Wellington communities. It was founded July 1, 2000, with Father Louis Guerin as the founding pastor.
Mass was first celebrated at the Wellington Boys and Girls Club, then in the cafeteria of Polo Park Middle School. The parish then used a modular building on the current property for Masses and as office and meeting-room space.
Father Brian Lehnert became the second pastor of the parish in July 2006. In late 2007, Fr. Lehnert began the campaign, “Building on Holy Ground,” as a continuation to Father Guerin’s “Share the Vision, Meet the Challenge” campaign from 2004. Through the generosity of the parishioners, the present building was erected and went into use with the first Mass being offered in May 2010. Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito blessed the new parish center/church building complex on the Feast Day of St. Therese, October 3rd, 2010.
On July 1, 2015, the fifteenth anniversary of the parish’s founding, Bishop Barbarito appointed Father David C. Downey as the third pastor. Deacon Pete Del Valle serves the parish.
In his letter to the parish community, Father Downey notes, “The three theological virtues of faith, hope and love are the foundation-stones upon which St. Therese Parish stands. We are centered in Jesus Christ as members of his one body, the Church, and as living-stones within the universal family of Roman Catholicism.”
St. Therese de Lisieux Parish has a strong dedication to the Respect Life ministry. Hope’s Heartbeat – Vigil For Life, Inc. is of a group of committed Christians who gather peacefully and prayerfully outside of Wellington Planned Parenthood. The group’s intention is to pray publicly on the first full week of the first month of each quarter in front of all four driveway entrances to the medical center parking lot where Planned Parenthood is located. They display signs that offer women, or their loved ones, the ability to send a text message requesting free assistance from Birthline/Lifeline Pregnancy Care Centers of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach.
In support of this ministry, the parish Respect Life ministry collected $608 from parishioners to help fund the Birthline/Lifeline “Steps for Life!” fundraiser which was held on October 5.
St. Therese de Lisieux Catholic Church is located at 11800 Lake Worth Road, Wellington, FL 33449.
