VERO BEACH | The 19th annual Bernard and Betty Egan Memorial Golf Classic to benefit the Samaritan Center shelter for homeless families is set for Friday, May 30, at the Indian River Club, 800 Carolina Circle S.W. in Vero Beach. Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
“The Samaritan Center, a program of Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach, is a comprehensive, multilevel homeless program for families in Indian River County that offers a proven solution to homelessness,” said Renee Bireley, the center’s development manager, in a letter promoting the golf outing. “To date, the Samaritan Center has provided shelter to over 2,087 residents, including over 1,176 children. The Samaritan Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has an operation budget of over $739,000.”
Readers may recall the powerful testimonial message from Jully, a Samaritan Center resident with her son, on this year’s Diocesan Services Appeal video. The mother and son were living in their car before they found a home at the center.
“The moment we walked through the doors of our new home, a sense of peace and love of the Lord flooded us. Seeing my son have a bed, a shower and a place to call home filled my heart with indescribable joy. There’s nothing like feeling safe and secure,” Jully said.
The golf classic, named for two of the founders of the Samaritan Center, will include all golfer fees, lunch, two mulligans, a door prize ticket and participation in all course games, with all proceeds going directly to benefit families at the center. The cost is $200 per person or $800 for a foursome. Registration deadline is May 16.
Sponsorships are available from $250 to $7,500 that include golf fees and many other perks. For information, contact Bireley at rbireley@ccdpb.org or 772-770-3039.
