As we enter the month of May, we look to Mary to whom this month is devoted as we are reminded of her role as the Mother of God, the Mother of the Church and our Mother as well. From the cross, Jesus gave us the gift of His Mother to be as close to us as she was and is to Him. As we celebrate Mother’s Day this month, it is the heart of a mother which conveys the love which is essential to a mother’s role and identity.
On the previous Sunday, April 19, Pope Leo XIV visited the shrine in Angola, southern Africa, known as Mama Muxima, the Shrine of the Mother of the Heart. In the Kimbundu language “muxima” means heart. The Shrine of Mama Muxima is the largest Catholic pilgrimage area in southern Africa, where Mary is regarded as a mother, intercessor and spiritual comforter. The shrine was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, but the faithful renamed it as Mother of the Heart, where so many prayers have been answered through Our Lady revealing so clearly her motherly heart over the years.
Both St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI visited Angola on their visits to Africa. However, Pope Leo was the first pope to visit the Shrine of Mama Muxima, which was met with an enthusiastic response from the over 30,000 pilgrims gathered for his visit. As Pope Leo entered the church, the crowds cheered loudly when he knelt before the statue of Mary to pray the rosary with them. In his address to the crowd, many of whom waited for two days in 90-degree heat to be there, the pope referred to how the faithful had renamed the shrine to Mama Muxima, expressing that it is “a beautiful title, which makes us reflect on the heart of Mary, a pure and wise heart, capable of treasuring and pointing to the extraordinary events in the life of the Son of God.”
Pope Leo praised the devotion of the people to Mary as one who loves all and who always listens to all. He praised their devotion as one that is so necessary as part of our lives as believers in her Son. He said, “We are in a sanctuary where, for centuries, many men and women have prayed in times of joy and also in moments of sorrow and great suffering in the history of this country. For a long time now, Mama Muxima has quietly worked to keep the heart of the Church alive and beating. Her heart contains a multitude of hearts: yours, and those of many people who love, pray, celebrate, weep and sometimes — even when unable to come in person — entrust their requests and petitions to letters and postal messages. … Mama Muxima welcomes everyone, listens to everyone and prays for everyone.”
We are living at a time when it seems that the heart is being lost to a false intellectual understanding of truth, to the priority of technology, and to material progress. We are being separated from each other as human persons as the digital world takes the place of heart-to-heart communication between people. We are living at a time when artificial intelligence holds concrete dangers of undermining our humanity even more. Pope Leo is deeply concerned about the challenges of artificial intelligence in replacing the human heart. It is no wonder that he wanted to visit the Shrine of the Mother of the Heart in his visit to Angola. Mary truly is the one who, as we are told in the Gospels on frequent occasions, treasured all of the events of Jesus’ life within her heart. From her heart, she lived more deeply the mystery of the Lord and shared it with others. How much we need to listen to her heart from which the human heart of Jesus came into existence.
In our world, so torn by war, division and materialism, it is only the heart that will put us in touch with who we are as made in the image and likeness of God. It is the heart which will help us, as Pope Leo expressed, to recognize humanity in the hearts of others and to respond to their needs. It is the heart which will enable us to live the joys of life as God has given them to us, and not as artificial intelligence imagines them for us. During this month of May, we look to Mary, our Mother as the Mother of the Heart, and ask her to open our hearts to her heart so that they may always be in union with her Son’s.
At the conclusion of his address to the faithful at the Shrine of Mama Muxima, Pope Leo exhorted, “It is love that must triumph, not war! This is what the heart of Mary — the heart of the Mother of all — teaches us. Let us set out, then, from this shrine as messenger angels of life, bringing Mary’s tender embrace and God’s blessings to everyone. … Mother of the Heart, we come to you to offer you everything. … We come to ask for your blessing.”

Madre del Corazón
Al entrar en el mes de mayo, nos dirigimos a María, a quien este mes está dedicado, y somos recordados de su papel como Madre de Dios, Madre de la Iglesia y también nuestra Madre. Desde la cruz, Jesús nos dio el regalo de su Madre para que estuviera tan cerca de nosotros como lo estuvo y lo está de Él. Al celebrar el Día de las Madres este mes, es el corazón de una madre el que transmite el amor que es esencial para el papel y la identidad de toda madre.
El domingo anterior, 19 de abril, el Papa León XIV visitó el santuario en Angola, en el sur de África, conocido como Mama Muxima, el Santuario de la Madre del Corazón. En la lengua kimbundu, “muxima” significa corazón. El Santuario de Mama Muxima es el área de peregrinación católica más grande del sur de África, donde María es considerada madre, intercesora y consuelo espiritual.
El santuario fue dedicado a la Inmaculada Concepción, pero los fieles lo renombraron como Madre del Corazón, donde tantas oraciones han sido escuchadas a través de Nuestra Señora, revelando tan claramente a lo largo de los años su corazón materno.
Tanto San Juan Pablo II como el Papa Benedicto XVI visitaron Angola en sus viajes a África. Sin embargo, el Papa León fue el primer pontífice en visitar el Santuario de Mama Muxima, lo cual fue recibido con una respuesta entusiasta por parte de los más de 30,000 peregrinos reunidos para su visita. Cuando el Papa León entró en la iglesia, la multitud aclamó fuertemente al verlo arrodillarse ante la estatua de María para rezar el rosario con ellos. En su discurso a los fieles, muchos de los cuales esperaron durante dos días bajo un calor de 90 grados fahrenheit para estar presentes, el Papa se refirió a cómo los fieles habían renombrado el santuario como Mama Muxima, expresando que es “Es un título precioso, que nos hace pensar en el Corazón de María: un corazón limpio y sabio, capaz de conservar y meditar los acontecimientos extraordinarios de la vida del Hijo de Dios”.
El Papa León elogió la devoción del pueblo a María como aquella que ama a todos y que siempre escucha a todos. Alabó su devoción como algo tan necesario en nuestra vida como creyentes en su Hijo. Dijo: “Nos encontramos en un santuario donde, durante siglos, muchos hombres y mujeres han rezado, en momentos de alegría y también en circunstancias tristes y muy dolorosas de la historia de este país. Aquí, desde hace mucho tiempo, Mama Muxima interviene silenciosamente para mantener vivo y palpitante el corazón de la Iglesia, un corazón hecho de muchos corazones: los de ustedes y los de tantas personas que aman, rezan, celebran, lloran y, a veces, incluso ante la imposibilidad de acudir físicamente, confían en cartas y mensajes postales sus peticiones y sus promesas, como ha recordado Su Excelencia. Mama Muxima acoge a todos, escucha a todos y reza por todos”.
Estamos viviendo en un tiempo en el que parece que el corazón se está perdiendo frente a una comprensión intelectual falsa de la verdad, frente a la prioridad de la tecnología y al progreso material. Nos estamos separando unos de otros como personas humanas, mientras el mundo digital va sustituyendo la comunicación de corazón a corazón entre las personas. Vivimos en una época en la que la inteligencia artificial plantea peligros concretos de debilitar aún más nuestra humanidad. El Papa León está profundamente preocupado por los desafíos de la inteligencia artificial en cuanto a la posible sustitución del corazón humano. No es de extrañar que haya querido visitar el Santuario de la Madre del Corazón en su viaje a Angola. María es verdaderamente aquella que, como nos dicen los Evangelios en repetidas ocasiones, guardaba todos los acontecimientos de la vida de Jesús en su corazón. Desde su corazón, vivió más profundamente el misterio del Señor y lo compartió con los demás. ¡Cuánto necesitamos escuchar su corazón, del cual provino el corazón humano de Jesús!
En nuestro mundo, tan desgarrado por la guerra, la división y el materialismo, es solo el corazón el que nos pondrá en contacto con quienes somos, creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Es el corazón el que nos ayudará, como expresó el Papa León, a reconocer la humanidad en el corazón de los demás y a responder a sus necesidades. Es el corazón el que nos permitirá vivir las alegrías de la vida tal como Dios nos las ha dado, y no como la inteligencia artificial las imagina para nosotros. Durante este mes de mayo, miramos a María, nuestra Madre, como la Madre del Corazón, y le pedimos que abra nuestros corazones a su corazón, para que estén siempre en unión con el de su Hijo.
Al concluir su discurso a los fieles en el Santuario de Mama Muxima, el Papa León exhortó: “¡Es el amor el que debe triunfar, no la guerra! Esto nos enseña el corazón de María, el corazón de la Madre de todos. Salgamos, pues, de este santuario como “ángeles-mensajeros” de vida, para llevar a todos la caricia de María y la bendición de Dios. Madre del corazón, venimos a ti para ofrecerte todo… Venimos a pedir tu bendición”.
