Director of Music Part-time - Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the pastor and liturgy committees in planning weekly liturgies, feast days, special celebrations and musical events and executing the plans.
  • Prepare PowerPoints for Masses and liturgies; including songs and hymns, readings and gospels and submitting in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure lyrics are projected with appropriate liturgical or spiritual images for the Masses.
  • Organize church choirs (children, adult, and multicultural combined choirs) in the parish.
  • Recruit, train and direct cantors and choir members.                        
  • Conduct and accompany at weekly rehearsals with all choirs, cantors as needed particularly for Easter and Christmas.
  • Lead music (play/direct choirs and cantor) at all English weekend Masses: currently 4 Masses: Saturday 4 pm; Sunday 7:30 am; 9 am; and 11 am. as well as at Christmas, Easter, Holy Days and other parish celebrations … (weddings & funerals - extra stipend provided).
  • Accompany the assembly at various liturgies with both traditional and contemporary music.
  • Coordinate trilingual Masses at various times throughout the year, as well as events like First Communion and Confirmation.
  • Provide prelude music and additional rehearsal with the assembly, if needed, before masses
  • Secure instrumentalist as needed for special occasions.
  • Secure a replacement when not available to perform.
  • Assist in maintaining the parish instruments, particularly the organ, sound system/ microphones, screen, projector and computer.
  • Continuously update professional and liturgical education
  • Update and renew license for music, music books or any software necessary for the music ministry. 

Qualifications:

  • Must be an accomplished organist and pianist.
  • Must have experience in directing music program or church music ministry
  • Must be talented musically and enthusiastically lead parishioners in worship.
  • Must be able to develop, lead, and implement plans to serve the liturgy, moving parishioners to full participation in the Mass and in other sacred gatherings.
  • Must have experience and knowledge of Catholic liturgy and be part of our parish Liturgy Committee.
  • Must display proficiency in computer and related technology, e.g. digital music, etc.
  • Must be an actively engaged member of the parish and the parish staff, and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and prayer.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills (ability to collaborate with other people) and show skills in coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
  • Must collaborate with professional Sound Technician to maintain equipment owned by the parish, striving to provide optimal sound quality.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying of under 15 pounds
  • Occasional moderate carrying and lifting of 15 – 44 pounds
  • Frequent use of both hands and fingers (i.e. typing)
  • Frequent extended periods of sitting and occasional periods of standing, kneeling and climbing
  • Occasional work in an environment with minimal hearing (i.e. loud noises, sirens) and routine hearing (listening to others in conversation)
  • Occasional work in close proximity with others
