This role is essential in supporting the spiritual and musical life of our parish. The Organist will be paid hourly for Masses and other liturgical services, with rehearsals considered part of ministry and therefore unpaid.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide organ music during regular weekend Masses, holy days of obligation, funerals, weddings (as needed), and other special liturgical celebrations.
  • Collaborate with the Pastor, Music Director, and/or choir to select and prepare appropriate liturgical music.
  • Serve as the primary organist for weddings and funerals held at the church, if available. Compensation for
these services is separate and paid directly by the family.
  • Rehearse with soloists or other instrumentalists for special occasions as needed.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled rehearsals (unpaid, considered voluntary service).
  • Arrive early to prepare and ensure all music is ready for each liturgy.
  • Maintain a professional and prayerful presence during services.
  • Communicate availability in advance to assist with scheduling.
    Preparation and maintenance
    • Independently select, learn, and practice all music to ensure a high-quality musical standard for
      services.
    • Maintain the church's organ and other musical instruments by reporting any necessary tuning,
maintenance, or repairs to the designated church staff.
    • Maintain a personal organ music library.
      Administration
    • Communicate with the Pastor or Director of Music regarding musical selections and other worship
      planning matters.
    • Notify the church with adequate lead time of any planned absences and assist in arranging for a
      qualified substitute organist.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in playing the organ (and optionally, piano).
  • Familiarity with Catholic liturgical music and Mass settings.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, choir members, and parish staff.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.
  • Prior experience in a church setting preferred.

Compensation:

  • Hourly pay for all liturgical services (Masses, funerals, weddings, etc.).
  • Rehearsals, time spent on personal practice or preparation are unpaid, as they are considered part of the volunteer commitment to the parish's music ministry.

Schedule:

  • Primarily weekends and holy days.
  • Occasional services during the week (e.g., funerals) based on availability.
  • Rehearsals as scheduled with the choir or Music Director.
  • Attendance is required for all scheduled weekend Masses, as well as Holy Days and special services as agreed upon.
