WEST PALM BEACH  |  The future is so bright at Cardinal Newman High School that a new project aims to add a bit of shade.

A comfortable outdoor area for students to gather before, between and after classes is being created in the courtyard between the classroom and multipurpose/gymnasium buildings, said Chuck Stembler, president of the school in West Palm Beach. With fabric resembling sails strung between large pillars, the courtyard will be shaded and enhance student life, he said.

“That really is the key. How do we always create a better student experience?” Stembler said. “I think when we look at the sunshade project, it’s going to give an outdoor area with some comfy furniture where kids can hang out and just enjoy being outside without the sun beating down on them.”

Cardinal Newman was recently named a “Top Catholic School 2025” by Education Insider, a leading authority in education news and analysis. The honor, announced in the publication’s October issue, places Cardinal Newman among the nation’s top institutions for excellence in faith-based education and student development.

Following an in-depth review and interview with Stembler, Education Insider commended the school’s culture of holistic development: “What stood out most was how Cardinal Newman High School leads with its identity as a Catholic institution and how that shapes the student experience. Placing spirit first, alongside mind and body, feels intentional and powerful. It’s not just about academics or extracurriculars; it’s about creating a space where students can explore their God-given talents, grow in confidence, and develop as individuals. That balance of faith, learning, and personal growth is rare.”

“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from Education Insider,” Stembler said. “It affirms that education is about more than knowledge — it’s about nurturing the whole person. This honor reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, families and supporters who together create a community where faith and learning thrive.”
