Guidance Counselor - John Carroll High School

John Carroll High School located in Fort Pierce, FL is searching for a Guidance Counselor for the 2023-2024 school year.

Job summary:

To provide, as a member of the guidance department staff, a comprehensive counseling program for students in grades nine through twelve; consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance effectiveness in helping a diverse student population in areas of personal/social, career and academic development. This position is rooted in the Catholic faith and the mission of the Catholic Church. The counselor is a professional member of the school staff who assists the administration in the integration of Catholic teaching while providing counseling services to support the spiritual, intellectual, social and psychological development of each student.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Advisory Services:

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principal of Academics and other guidance counselor in admissions, college planning, strategic planning, enrichment, outreach, remediation and standardized testing.
  • Provide individual counseling, as well as small group and classroom guidance activities
  • Work with culturally and academically diverse student population with varying learning needs
  • Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans
    • Enable students to identify interests, values and career options
    • Possess extensive knowledge of the college application process
  • Communicate and exchange information with parents via conferences and parent information nights
  • Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding developmental needs of students ○ Coordinate with the school’s Academic Support Coordinator as needed; perform brief intelligence screenings (such as the K‐BIT) as needed
  • Coordinate and advise students in course selection each spring, in conjunction with the Assistant Principal of Academics
  • In cooperation with the Principal, create the Master Schedule
  • Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school
  • All other duties as assigned by the Principal and Assistant Principal of Academics

Counseling Services:

  • Provide mental health counseling services for students as needed
    • Refer students to appropriate program specialists or community agencies
    • Coordinate with the school’s resource officer in matters of mental health and school safety
  • Assist administration as needed with behavioral/disciplinary issues or conferences
  • Provide a variety of intervention formats (individual, small and large group) to assist students in the development of skills such as decision‐making, problem‐solving, value clarification, self‐awareness, tolerance, career planning and positive mental health
  • Assist students in understanding and managing their emotions, stress, conflicts and responsibilities
  • Participate in crisis intervention within school community
  • Assist students in building respect for self and others, especially in the areas of social skills and conflict resolution
  • Consult with teachers and staff regarding student academic and behavioral issues to assist with formulating strategies to address concerns
  • Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the Diocese of Palm Beach
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and other professionals
  • Enhance grade‐level curriculum by providing guidance related lesson materials compatible with the Catholic faith and tenets of Catholic social teaching
  • Participate in activities that develop and strengthen the effective operation and understating of the Catholic faith

Additional Job‐Related Expectations and Duties:

  • Follow all policies and procedures written in the Faculty Handbook
  • Be punctual and reliable for all school events
  • Attend morning prayer, school Masses, Open House, Baccalaureate Mass, and graduation; strive to attend and participate in John Carroll functions throughout the year
  • Attend Diocesan Professional Days
  • Give advance notification and keep Principal apprised of off‐campus appointments, always updating the school’s log book accordingly
  • Other school‐related responsibilities as determined by the Principal

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or School Counseling with certification from Florida Department of Education
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, as well as Renweb
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with Naviance strongly preferred
  • Excellent and professional interpersonal skills and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and make responsible judgment calls
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to use office equipment (fax, computer, copier, iPad, etc.)
  • Willing to become proficient in computer and iPad applications used by the school

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying of under 15 pounds
  • Occasional moderate carrying and lifting of 15 – 44 pounds
  • Frequent use both hands and fingers (i.e. typing)
  • Frequent extended periods of sitting or standing
  • Occasional periods of kneeling and climbing
  • Occasional ability of minimal hearing (i.e. loud noises, sirens) and routine hearing (i.e. listening to others in conversation)
  • Frequent time spent working closely with others
