John Carroll High School is seeking to hire a full-time guidance counselor for the 2025–2026 school year.
Applicants must have a degree in Counseling or School Counseling (Master’s degree preferred) with certification from the Florida Department of Education and have a minimum of three years of experience as a school guidance counselor. Experience working with high school students and knowledge of college/career planning is highly preferred. High School: - Guidance Counselor - 10-month Employee
Full Time: 37 ½ hrs. (Monday – Friday) 7:30 am – 3:30 pm
Additional Hours required on special events and occasional weekends
Off: All school holidays
Reports to: Assistant Principal of Academics (APA)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities of the Academic Advisor
Academic Advising:
- Collaborate with the APA and guidance counselor in admissions, college planning, strategic planning, enrichment, outreach, remediation and standardized testing.
- Provide individual academic advising, counseling, as well as small group and classroom guidance activities, with a specific focus on Grades 11 and 12
- Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans
- Enable students to identify interests, values and career options/Possess extensive knowledge of the college application process
- Communicate and exchange information with parents via conferences and parent information nights
- Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding developmental needs of students
- Coordinate with the school’s Academic Support Coordinator**; perform brief intelligence screenings (such as the K‐BIT) as needed
- Consult with coaches regarding student-athletes who are interested in pursuing athletics in the college setting; provide resources and information
- Coordinate and advise students in course selection each spring, in conjunction with the APA
Admissions Support:
- Review admissions files and collaborate with the guidance team on best placement for incoming freshmen
- Assist the Director of Enrollment with transfer student files as necessary in the summer
Counseling:
- Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation the counseling program and school
- Provide emergent mental health counseling as needed, and make referrals as necessary
Standardized Testing:
- Support and assist the Assistant Principal of Academics with coordinating the school’s AP Program
- Coordinate with the guidance team and enrollment director to provide the High School Placement Test to incoming 9th graders; be present to administer tests on one or two Saturdays/year
- Work with the Assistant Principal of Academics to compile and analyze data for teachers to use in their PLCs or department meetings to improve student learning outcomes
Miscellaneous
- All other duties as assigned by the Principal and Assistant Principal of Academics

- Attend Diocesan Professional Days
- Give advance notification and keep Principal apprised of off-campus appointments, always updating the school’s log book accordingly
- Other school-related responsibilities as determined by the Principal
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Master’s degree
- Must maintain a valid Florida professional certification in guidance or be eligible for certification
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, as well as Renweb
- Excellent and professional interpersonal skills and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to multi-task, work independently, and make responsible judgment calls
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to use office equipment (fax, computer, copier, iPad, etc.)
Physical Requirements
- Occasional light lifting and carrying of under 15 pounds
- Occasional moderate carrying and lifting of 15 – 44 pounds
- Frequent use both hands and fingers (i.e. typing)
- Frequent extended periods of sitting or standing
- Occasional periods of kneeling and climbing
- Occasional ability of minimal hearing (i.e. loud noises, sirens) and routine hearing (i.e. listening to others in conversation)
- Frequent time spent working closely with others
