Part Time Music Director - Our Lady Queen of the Apostles

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 The Director of Music works with the Pastor and Liturgy Committee to plan liturgies and music. The Director develops and directs choirs to provide musical leadership on Saturdays, Sundays, Holy Days and for other special liturgies that will lead the parishioners “to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for the by the very nature of the liturgy”.

 General Duties:

  •  Oversee all music and musical groups in the parish.
  • Play the organ or piano and direct choir and/or cantor for the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturdays, 9:45 and 11:30 AM Masses on Sunday.
  • Healing Mass in Advent and Lent.
  • Penance services in Advent and Lent.
  • Plan, participate and direct all Holy Day liturgies, parish missions as needed, and services as directed by the pastor.
  • Oversee 6:00 PM band and assist as necessary.
  • Recruit members for, develop, and direct, or oversee the direction of the various choirs at OLQA. as determined by the Pastor and Director to be necessary.
  • With Pastor and Liturgy Committee, plan liturgies and music.
  • Other tasks as required by the pastor.
  • Recruit cantors and members for choirs.  

Other Responsibilities:

  • Plan or oversee planning for all music for congregational singing and choirs.
  • Organ/piano practice
  • Communicate regularly with pastor, manager, staff and parishioners as appropriate.
  • Schedule and rehearse cantors for Masses at which there will be no choir.
  • Recruit and rehearse special extra musicians for feast days within the approved budget.
  • Work with the liturgy committee to plan the environment for seasons and feasts.
  • Find and schedule substitute musicians when going on vacation.
  • See to the maintenance and tuning of the parish’s pianos and organ within approved budget.
  • Play organ/piano for weddings as requested on an individual contract basis; rehearse soloists for weddings.
  • Approve outside organists who may use the organ.

Qualifications: 

  • An undergraduate degree in music/liturgy or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience.
  • Knowledge of the Catholic liturgy including liturgy documents, music resources including current hymnals, etc. and familiarity with the Lectionary and Sacramentary.
  • Proficiency in organ, piano and voice.
  • Active member of the Catholic Church
  • Understanding basic music theory such as key signatures, meter, and standard notation.
  • Vocal experience ability to sing with accurate pitch and rhythm demonstrating knowledge of vocal production.
  • Enthusiastic and equally interact well with adults, young and children. Work well with parish team and other staff, employees/volunteers
  • Demonstrate organizational skills needed to manage time appropriately, set priorities and accomplish tasks.
  • Proficiency in MS office Suite, Including Work, Excel, Outlook and Internet.
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and make responsible judgement calls.
  • Ability to work effectively with Diocesan employees, departments heads, representatives of other agencies and the general public.
  • Excellent written, verbal and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem-solving capacity.
  • Ability to stay focused and organized.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Adhere to the Diocese of Palm Beach Code of Conduct with emphasis on confidentiality and able to exercise discretion and good business judgment
  •  Strong ethical values.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying of under 15 pounds
  • Occasional moderate carrying and lifting of 15 – 44 pounds
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent bending, climbing, stretching and kneeling
  • Frequent use of both hands and fingers
  • Occasional moments of minimal and routine hearing
