Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom for Mission

Jun 21 to Jul 4, 2017

Our Catholic Church will once again focus on religious liberty and religious freedom during the Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom for Mission, which will take place June 21 to July 4. The theme this year – Freedom for Mission calls on us to follow Christ as missionary disciples by seeking the truth, serving others, and living our faith in all that we do.

This two-week time period is designed to promote the importance of preserving the essential right of religious freedom, for now and the future, for Catholics and for those of all faiths. The fortnight also promotes prayer, education and public action. The Fortnight for Freedom occurs annually at a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power, including St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.

On its website -- - the U.S. Bishops has a multitude of resources. A few new items this year are:

  • Pray-Reflect-Act - A series of short, daily reflections on different aspects of freedom and Christian mission.
  • How to Talk about Religious Liberty - In our polarized country, Christians can make a significant contribution by speaking with confidence and respect about issues that are important to us. This short, practical guide aims to help Christians talk about the topic of religious freedom.

Some of the other resources are prayers; a series of examples of current threats to religious liberty in the U.S; high school lesson plans; a 14-day study guide on Dignitatis humanae; Freedom to….Fact Sheets; videos and more. For more information, visit
