Watch the Livesteam of the U.S. Bishops' Mass of Prayer & Penance for Survivors of Sexual Abuse within the Church

As the U.S. bishops gather today for the start of a two-day Spring General Assembly, the bishops will have a special Mass of Prayer and Penance for victims of sexual abuse within the Church. The Mass will be livestreamed starting at 5 p.m. tonight at Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Indianapolis. In an act of solidarity, penance and humility, during this special Mass the bishops will kneel and recite a commemorative prayer that has been written for survivors of abuse in their healing. The Mass is being held in response to a call from Pope Francis for all episcopal conferences across the world to have a Day of Prayer and Penance for victims of sexual abuse within the Church.

 **More Information**
This month is the 15th anniversary of the implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. This June anniversary as well as the Mass of Prayer and Penance reminds us of the work and great strides our Church has taken in the area work of child and youth protection.
Since 2002, dioceses and eparchies across the country have worked to fulfill the Charter's "Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal." Mindful that our work continues and that we are to remain vigilant, we have focused on efforts to effectively prevent abuse, respond to allegations, and bring healing to victims/survivors.
In the Diocese of Palm Beach since 2002:
  • 30,000 clergy, religious and lay people have been through the background screening process.
  • 30,000 have completed the training of the VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children" workshop.
  • Every 5 years those who have been background screened are screened again.
