St. Sebastian Catholic Church

On June 5, 1960, the Catholic population of North Indian River County began to celebrate Mass at the Sebastian Yacht Club. Soon there was a need for a permanent church structure, and the parishioners raised funds and received a grant from the Catholic Extension Society, Chicago. Ground was broken October 28, 1961, and construction began for the Mission of St. William.

The parishioners worked long and hard to turn a bare building into a church. The congregation slowly but steadily increased. On September 1, 1981, the Diocese of Orlando decreed that St. William Mission be elevated to a parish. Property on U.S. Highway 1 was purchased, and a temporary church, residence and education buildings were constructed. The mission was renamed St. Sebastian Parish and Father Joe LeSage was appointed as founding pastor.

The new church was occupied just before Thanksgiving 1995, with formal dedication on the feast of St. Sebastian, January 20, 1996. In 1998, a perpetual adoration chapel was added in one of the adjacent buildings, and a meditation gazebo was added near the rear of the property.

The growth of St. Sebastian Parish continued under the leadership of Father Timothy Sockol until 2000. Father John Morrissey was appointed administrator and installed a pastor in September 2000.

Under Father Morrissey’s leadership, the parish continued to grow in numbers and activities with more than 2,000 registered families. Enrollment in St. Sebastian’s religious education and youth ministry has swelled to more than 500 children and young people. Today, more than 40 active ministries provide support to its parishioners and members of the surrounding community.

A unique ministry of St. Sebastian Parish is Women Inspiring, Nurturing, and Growing Spiritually (W.I.N.G.S). It is open to all women of the parish who finds themselves busy taking care of others' needs and are seeking spiritual rejuvenation through fellowship. Participants are guided through a series of reflections which allow them to look at choices they make each day, to think about the things they value and to recognize God's hand in all they do.

Father Marcos Zamora and Father Richard Sparks are assistant priests at St. Sebastian Parish, and Father Sabas Mallya is the parochial vicar. Deacon Steve Guess, Deacon John Dunlop, Deacon Patrick Moynihan and Deacon Arnie Goodman serve the parish.

St. Sebastian Catholic Church is located at 13075 US Highway 1, Sebastian, FL 32958.
