Knights Guide Parishioners Back to Church

With the recent reopening of churches in the Diocese of Palm Beach, the Blessed Mother Council (13338) of the Knights of Columbus in Delray Beach formed a Hospitality Committee to help return the parish family safely back to church. The Knights collaborated with Father Gaudioso Zamora, pastor of Emmanuel Church, to establish this new ministry that monitors the health and safety of parishioners during weekend Masses.

Volunteer Knights welcome parishioners into the church and ensure they are socially distanced when seated. After every Mass, they sanitize all the surfaces in the church including pews, handrails, kneelers, lecterns, doorknobs and restrooms.

“It’s kind of like doing the work of the original apostles who brought the first Christians to the church,” said Grand Knight Bob Albertson. “We want to safely bring people back to church.”

The council also coordinated with Father Zamora to move parishioners into Columbus Hall, which has been made available at regular Mass times in the event of overflow attendance. Since the resumption of masses at Emmanuel Parish, attendance has increased significantly through these efforts.

Albertson continued, "We want to encourage anyone who believes they can safely return to Mass, to return to Mass. We’ll be on duty making sure the church is open and safe for everyone who wants to be there. And we’ll be doing it until we can pack the church on Sundays again.”
