Father James (Seamus) Murtagh

It is with great sadness that we notify you that Father Seamus Murtagh passed into eternal life on February 16, 2021.

Father Murtagh was ordained to the priesthood at St. Patrick’s College, Carlow, Ireland on June 11, 1966.  He began his ministry in the Archdiocese of Miami at St. Clement Church in Ft. Lauderdale.  He had many other assignments in the Archdiocese, the last of which was being named Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Church in West Palm Beach.  When the Diocese of Palm Beach was formed in 1984, he was named as the first Chancellor and Moderator of the Curia and was on numerous Diocesan committees over the years.  He was a faculty member at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach.

In 2000 he was appointed Pastor of St. Ann parish in West Palm Beach and continued as Chancellor, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia.  In 2002 he was appointed as Apostolic Administrator for a short time and established the Lay Review Board that continues today. He had great compassion for the homeless. He was the founder of St. Ann’s Place and Holy Ground Shelter in West Palm Beach.  He retired in 2011 and assisted at parishes whenever he could.
