Bishop Barbarito's Statement on Court's Ruling on Same Sex Marriage

Today, following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to redefine the definition of marriage, the Diocese of Palm Beach released the following statement from Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Palm Beach. The court’s decision forces states to license and recognize marriages between two persons of the same sex.

Here is the statement:

Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling on Same Sex Marriage from

Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Palm Beach

While we are disappointed in today’s decision of the Supreme Court which basically redefines marriage for our nation, it does not affect the teaching and practice of the Catholic Church in regard to marriage.  The Catholic Church, in accordance with divine law, teaches that marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and woman ordered for the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children.  In God’s plan, marriage is based on the complementarity of the sexes which gives rise to the family as the foundation of society.  The celebration of marriage is governed by the norms of canon law for the universal Church.

The Diocese of Palm Beach posted the statement to its website and also posted a press release and response from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The statement can be found at

The Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach encompasses the five counties of Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee. Comprised of 280,000 Catholics in 53 parishes and missions, the Diocese also serves the faithful community through its schools.
