Statement from Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito on the Beginning of the Conclave

As the Conclave begins, and the Cardinals of the Church gather to choose the successor of Benedict XVI and our Church’s next shepherd, there is much excitement and anticipation not only within the Catholic Church family, but around the world.  Such an event serves as a reminder that it is the Lord who guides the Church.

I ask our Diocesan family to pray for the Cardinals who shoulder this awesome responsibility.  During the General Conclave meetings held over the past week, we have seen the Cardinals enter into prayer.  On Tuesday they began the day with a Mass for the Election of a New Pope and in the evening prayed Vespers shortly before the Conclave officially began.  Let their prayerful actions serve as an example for us all to enter deeply into prayer at this important time in the life of the Church.
